Reading time: approx. 8 min.  ·  Last updated: 6 October 2026  ·  By Home Deluxe Editorial Team

Your first visit to a sauna often raises more questions than you might expect: How long should I stay inside? How hot should it be? Do I really need to take an ice-cold shower afterwards – and what exactly is a sauna infusion? There is no need to worry: sauna bathing is not a competition. It is one of the oldest and most soothing wellness traditions, and with a few simple ground rules you will quickly find a rhythm that feels right for you.

In this beginner’s guide, we show you step by step how a relaxing sauna session works, which type of sauna may suit you best and which common beginner mistakes you can easily avoid. That way, your first sauna experience can become a comforting ritual you will not want to miss.

Key Facts at a Glance

• Routine: Shower & dry off → sweat for 8–15 min. → get some fresh air → cool down with cold water → rest for 10–20 min. Repeat the cycle 2–3 times.
• Temperature: Finnish sauna 80–100°C, bio sauna 45–60°C, infrared cabin approx. 30–50°C with gentle deep heat.
• Towels: Always bring two – one to sit or lie on so no part of your body touches the wood directly, and one for drying off.
• Do not skip the cool-down: Start with some fresh air, then cool down with cold water from the feet upwards – do not begin around the heart area.
• Ideal for beginners: A bio sauna or infrared cabin – gentler heat and an easy introduction.
• Hydration: Drink plenty of water before and after your sauna session, but not during the heat phase itself.

Why Use a Sauna? The Key Benefits

Sauna bathing is about much more than pleasant warmth. The rapid change between heat and cold gives the blood vessels a kind of gentle workout: they widen in the heat and contract again as the body cools down. This alternation stimulates circulation and is experienced by many people as deeply relaxing.

Regular sauna users also often report suffering from colds less frequently – the alternating heat and cold stimuli are considered a form of training for the body’s natural defences. The warmth can help loosen tense muscles after exercise or a long day at the office, stimulate blood flow to the skin and leave you feeling refreshed all over. And last but not least, the sauna gives your mind a chance to switch off. No phone, no pressure from appointments – just warmth, quiet and a few minutes entirely to yourself.

Which Sauna Is Right for Me? Types at a Glance

Not every sauna is equally hot – and that is good news for beginners. The three most common types differ mainly in temperature and humidity. If you prefer a gentler introduction, there is no need to start at 100°C.

For a particularly gentle introduction, a bio sauna or infrared cabin can be an excellent choice: pleasant warmth, less intense heat and still a soothing wellness experience. If you are looking for traditional, intense heat and the classic sauna infusion ritual, a Finnish sauna is the better fit.

Your Sauna Session Step by Step

A traditional sauna visit consists of several rounds. Here is how a single session typically works for beginners:

1. Shower & dry off: Take a thorough shower before your first session and dry yourself well. Dry skin tends to start sweating more quickly.
2. Warm up (optional): A warm foot bath before your first session can help your body start sweating more easily.
3. Sweat: Spend 8–15 minutes in the sauna. As a beginner, sit on the lower or middle bench, where the heat is milder.
4. Prepare to leave: Sit upright for the final 1–2 minutes so your circulation can adjust before you stand up.
5. Fresh air: Step outside into the fresh air and take a few deep breaths – this helps cool the airways.
6. Cool down: Take a cold shower (see below) or use a plunge pool.
7. Rest: Relax in your bathrobe for 10–20 minutes and have something to drink.

Then begin the next round. For beginners, two to three rounds are usually more than enough – doing more does not necessarily provide any additional benefit.

How Long, How Hot, How Often?

The most important rule for beginners is simple: listen to your body. That said, a few general guidelines can make it easier to get started.

• Duration per session: 8 to 15 minutes. If 8 minutes feels like enough, leave the sauna then – there is no benefit in forcing yourself to stay longer.
• Temperature & bench choice: The higher you sit, the hotter it gets. As a beginner, choose the lower or middle bench.
• Number of rounds: 2 to 3 rounds per visit. More than three sessions generally do not provide any additional benefit.
• Frequency: 1 to 2 sauna visits per week can be a good routine if you want to enjoy the benefits regularly.

Cooling Down Properly – the Most Important Part

Many beginners underestimate the cool-down phase, even though it is an important part of the sauna routine. The cold stimulus causes the blood vessels that widened in the heat to contract again. The key is to cool down in the right order:

1. Fresh air: Start with 30 seconds to 1 minute in the fresh air and breathe calmly to cool your airways.
2. Cold shower: Begin with cold water at your feet and slowly work upwards: right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, then the torso and finally the face.
3. Optional plunge pool: Only use a plunge pool after showering and only if you feel well enough to do so.

The Sauna Infusion: The Heart of the Experience

During a sauna infusion, water – often mixed with essential fragrance oils – is poured over the hot sauna stones. The rising steam causes the humidity to increase suddenly, and although the actual temperature remains the same, the heat feels noticeably more intense. For many sauna users, the infusion is the highlight of the entire session.

As a beginner, it is best to be seated in the sauna before the infusion starts rather than entering halfway through. This gives your body time to adjust gradually to the heat. If it becomes too hot for you, it is completely fine to leave the sauna calmly.

Sauna Etiquette & Essentials for Beginners

A few unwritten rules make the sauna experience more pleasant for everyone – and with the right essentials, you can feel comfortable from the very beginning.

What to Pack in Your Sauna Bag

• Two towels: one to sit or lie on so no part of your body touches the wood directly, and one for drying off.
• Bathrobe & pool sandals: for walking between areas and relaxing during rest periods.
• Water: to drink before and after your sauna session.
• Optional: shower gel for after your final round and a book for your rest period.

The Most Important Etiquette Rules

• Shower before entering the sauna and dry yourself thoroughly.
• Always sit or lie on your towel inside the sauna – including your feet.
• Remove jewellery beforehand, as metal can become very hot.
• Keep noise to a minimum – the sauna is a place for relaxation rather than conversation.
• Close the door promptly when leaving so the heat stays inside.

The Most Common Beginner Mistakes

Your Own Sauna at Home

Once you discover the benefits of sauna bathing, you may no longer want to rely on public pools or spa centres. Having your own sauna in the garden or at home means you can enjoy the heat whenever you like – without travelling, paying admission fees or sharing a crowded cabin. From compact models for two people to spacious garden saunas for the whole family, there is an option to suit almost every home.

For outdoor use, barrel saunas and garden saunas are popular choices, while compact traditional saunas work particularly well indoors. When choosing a model, consider how many people will use it, the right sauna heater and a suitable location with a solid, level surface.

A Gentler Start: Infrared Cabins

Prefer a milder introduction? Then an infrared cabin can be an ideal place to start. Instead of heating the air to very high temperatures, infrared heaters warm the body with pleasant deep heat at around 30–50°C. The cabin heats up quickly, can be operated from a standard power socket and can fit comfortably into smaller rooms.

From space-saving single-person models to family cabins for up to four people, infrared cabins make it easy to turn soothing warmth into a regular wellness ritual at home.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long should a beginner stay in the sauna?

For beginners, 8 to 15 minutes per sauna session is usually enough. How you feel is more important than the exact length of time, so if you want to leave earlier, do so. Two to three rounds per visit are generally sufficient.

Which type of sauna is best for beginners?

For a gentler introduction, a bio sauna at 45–60°C or an infrared cabin at around 30–50°C can be a good choice. Both use milder temperatures than a traditional Finnish sauna and can therefore feel more comfortable for beginners.

Do I really need to take an ice-cold shower afterwards?

Cooling down is an important part of the sauna routine because it helps the blood vessels contract again after the heat. Always begin at the feet and work your way upwards gradually rather than starting around the heart. If you prefer a gentler approach, you can begin with cool water instead of ice-cold water.

How often should I use a sauna each week?

One to two sauna visits per week can be a good routine if you want to enjoy the experience regularly. Consistency is generally more important than having occasional, particularly long sauna days.

What should I eat and drink before using a sauna?

Avoid using the sauna on either a very full or completely empty stomach. A light meal around one to two hours beforehand is usually a good choice. Drink enough water before and after your sauna session to replace lost fluids, and avoid alcohol.

Can I install a sauna at home?

Yes. Barrel saunas and garden saunas are suitable for outdoor spaces, while compact traditional saunas or infrared cabins can work well indoors. Important requirements include a solid, level surface, adequate ventilation and the correct electrical connection for the heater. Compact infrared cabins can often be operated from a standard power socket.

Conclusion: A Relaxed Start to the World of Sauna

Sauna bathing is easier than many people think: spend 8 to 15 minutes in the heat, get some fresh air, cool down with cold water and then rest – repeating the cycle two to three times. Listen to your body, drink enough water and do not worry about chasing record temperatures. For a gentler introduction, a bio sauna or infrared cabin can be ideal, while a Finnish sauna with an infusion offers the classic sauna experience.
